FAQ
How rare are pink diamonds?
Natural pink diamonds are among the rarest gemstones ever discovered. There is only one known consistent source—the Argyle Mine in western Australia—which produced over 90% of the world’s pink diamond supply. The mine closed forever in November 2020, so Argyle Pink™ Diamonds are now getting rarer by the day. Consider that of all the diamonds mined at Argyle for the past 30 years or so, only .01% of them were pink, and you could fit all pink diamonds mined in a year weighing a half-carat or more in the palm of your hand. How rare? Beyond rare.
Why is a pink diamond so much more expensive than a white diamond?
All diamonds are rare and are considered precious gifts from Mother Nature. Pink diamonds are extremely rare, and considered the rarest natural treasures ever discovered on Earth. Up until its closure in November 2020, the Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia was essentially the sole source of natural pink diamonds. In its three decades of existence, more than 825 million carats of diamonds were mined there—but only .01% of them were pink, and that accounted for more than 90% of all pink diamonds mined anywhere on the planet. So it is the extreme rarity, as well as the unquestionable beauty of pink diamonds that contribute to their considerable value versus white diamonds.
Why do some pink diamonds appear more pink than others?
Firstly, there are various degrees of color saturation that fall within the pink spectrum, and Argyle Pink™ Diamonds has created a carefully researched color grading scale to define these various grades. (Check out the APD Color Chart here). To summarize and simplify the grading system, the richer the color, the rarer and more valuable the diamond is. J Fine offers a wide spectrum of Argyle Pink™ Diamonds and jewelry across a variety of price points. You’ll find designs with deep, rich pink diamonds and styles with lighter pinks as well. Every single one is rare, valuable, and special, and the variety of colors helps us keep “rarity within reach” for all.
Second, the shape a diamond is cut into also can determine how much light enters into it and some shapes, like round brilliant diamonds, can appear lighter or darker in different lighting conditions. Typically, bright fluorescent lights tend to give pink diamonds a fainter appearance, while natural outdoor light such as that which occurs in early evening, or even softer incandescent lighting will give the diamonds a richer pink appearance.
Does my piece come with an Argyle certificate?
Most J Fine jewelry containing an Argyle Pink™ Diamond weighing 0.08ct or above will come with an Argyle Certificate of Authenticity from the mine. Additionally, all J Fine jewelry is accompanied by a Jewelry Authentication report that includes the full details of the piece, including the original Argyle stock numbers that each Argyle Pink™ Diamond was assigned, thus further verifying its authenticity and unique provenance.
Do you sell loose Argyle Pink™ Diamonds?
J FINE is an Authorized Partner of Argyle, which means we are one of only a handful of companies in the world who purchase Argyle Pink™ Diamonds directly from the mine. So in addition to the beautiful jewelry you see presented on our site, we have a significant inventory of loose diamonds ranging in sizes from 0.01ct up to 2.00ct and larger in a range of colors, tones and shapes. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with our customers to create custom, one-of-a-kind jewelry, so please feel free to reach out and let’s get started!
Why are so many pink diamonds a lower clarity?
Pink diamonds are believed to be formed under such immense pressure that the crystal structure of the stone is altered in a way that produces the notable color in these rare gems. In general, it is also common for pink diamonds to have lower clarity grades, attributable in part to the same stresses and pressure that causes them to be pink. The majority of pink diamonds fall within the SI to I1 clarity range, although inclusions often are less noticeable due to the richness of color present. It is the intensity of color and its hue, tone and saturation that is most important when evaluating pink diamonds, while clarity contributes a lesser role in establishing value.
Is the Argyle diamond mine really closed and will it reopen?
After operating for more than 30 years, the Argyle Mine closed forever in November 2020, with no plans to reopen. With no other consistent source for natural pink diamonds anywhere on the planet, the rare treasures unearthed at Argyle are becoming rarer and more valuable with every passing day.
Are Argyle Pink™ Diamonds conflict free?
Yes, every Argyle Pink™ Diamond originates from the Argyle Mine in Australia—a country that is free of the types of civil war and unrest present in other diamond-producing regions of the world. Argyle Pink™ Diamonds are responsibly mined using the most ethical best practices, and each one is tracked from the time it is carefully unearthed until it reaches its ultimate destination—a collector or jewelry lover who then becomes the final steward of nature’s most precious gift. An Argyle Certificate of Authenticity ensures its pristine provenance.
Where do the gemstones you use in your pieces originate from?
All Argyle Pink™ Diamonds used in J Fine jewelry come directly from the Argyle mine in Australia. Many of the other diamonds we use in our designs also come from Australia and other non-conflict regions, while the majority of beautiful gemstones we use are sourced from Brazil and other South American countries.
